I went to Salvation Army right after Christmas, and I was amazed by the trucks filled to the top with people’s donated stuff. I realized how easy it is to get rid of our possessions and to buy new ones during this time of the year. After New Year’s, I’m confronted with images of “the new me” on magazine covers and email promotions. In Out With The Old, In With The New, I’m burying previously owned objects and presenting new products that could take their place in a video animation. By using gardening as a means of burying, I’m comparing the natural with the cultural and artificial. Growing plants takes care and cultivation. Media suggests I can change who I am with the click of a “buy now” button. The plant symbolizes a substantial, internal change that to me feels more natural than changing my outer self and material surroundings.
